about
Fresh from releasing his current EP Dokutsu, Foodman has teamed up with two very different if similarly esoteric artists, Ethan P. Flynn and Otta, to release the new track Too Much Light on 3rd July. The track will be released exclusively on Bandcamp, via Highball, the new label exporting forward-thinking music from Japan. 100% of proceeds from the release will be donated to Black Lives Matter.
Too Much Light finds the three artists blending their disparate sounds into something a world away from what each would create individually. Clattering percussion and exuberant bursts of synth power the instrumentation, which melds Foodman’s audacious style with a looser live feel courtesy of Ethan P. Flynn. The future-facing production is infused with a timeless neo-soul vocal from Otta, making for one of 2020’s most imaginative new tracks.
The Nagoya-based producer Foodman’s (aka 食品まつり or Shokuhin Matsuri) multifaceted skills also encompass DJing and painting. From the stripped-back sketches of his 2012 set Shokuhin (released on Giant Claw’s Orange Milk label) to the richer textures of last year’s ODOODO (issued on Diplo’s Mad Decent), Foodman has subverted everything from Okinawan folk to J-Pop to D&B/classical fusion into his own otherworldly inventions.
Whether collaborating with fka twigs or issuing his own solo material, multi-instrumentalist and Young Turks artist Ethan P. Flynn is consistently eclectic. It’s therefore no surprise to discover that the Londoner’s influences stretch from MF Doom to Low to Captain Beefheart, a mix captured on his album B-Sides & Rarities: Vol. 1.
Signed to Kwes’ BOKKLE label, Otta has emerged as one to watch following releases such as her debut EP after it all blew over. The half-Finnish, half-British artist draws on vintage soul and experimental ambient production to create a sonic style with an appealing future-retro aesthetic. The FADER described her single small hours as “a perfect piece of melancholy pop”, while The Line of Best Fit hailed her ability to “bring together electronic, jazz, future-pop and R&B sensibilities in a refreshing way.”

Vinyl is spinning. It is a Great Vinyl. I'm very happy I've found this particular sound for My Old Dual 506 turntable. Perfect for a rainy day like this. Albi
Foodman makes abstract music fun! People throw around words like “different” and “creative”, but Foodman’s music truly embodies these adjectives. Big up Hyperdub for signing yet another siginficant international artist! Lord Dubious
